SAN DIEGO — Former President Joe Biden delivered the keynote speech at the Society for Human Resource Management’s convention in San Diego on Wednesday, addressing nearly 20,000 HR professionals both in-person and virtually at the San Diego Convention Center.

“The president of the United States is a chief people officer… at least he should be,” Biden said, emphasizing the importance of human resources in leadership roles.

The former president praised HR professionals for their efforts in creating positive and inclusive work environments.

“It’s how we build strong workplaces, strong economies, and a strong nation. I’m grateful to every one of you, helping build a world where workers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” he said.

Biden joins former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton as keynote speakers at the SHRM conference, highlighting the event’s significance in the HR industry.

During his address, Biden shared insights into his post-presidency activities, revealing that he continues to engage with world leaders behind the scenes.

“How can you just walk away? You don’t see me out there publicly doing a lot of this,” said Biden.

He also injected some humor into his speech, mentioning his recreational pursuits.

“They ask to see me and I see them, I’m also laying rubber with my ’67 Corvette in my driveway,” said Biden.

Addressing speculation about his political future, Biden firmly stated, “I’m feeling good! I’m not running!”

SHRM said in a press release that the former president discussed leadership and the future of the workforce.

“SHRM is honored to welcome President Joe Biden to the SHRM25 Main Stage at such a critical time for the world of work. As workplaces continue to evolve in response to economic shifts, AI advancements and workforce transformation, his perspective as a global leader will add valuable insight to our ongoing dialogue,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, President and CEO of SHRM, in a press release.

Biden joined hundreds of other speakers at the conference who discussed the best workplace practices and how to create a healthy environment.

“At SHRM, we are committed to empowering HR professionals with the knowledge and resources to shape inclusive, forward-thinking workplaces. I know this will be a compelling conversation as we navigate the future of work together,” Taylor said.

Following his appearance in San Diego, Biden announced plans to travel to Los Angeles to meet his first great-grandson.
